Resting quietly between Franktown and Kiowa, the town of Elizabeth is a like Colorado time capsule. Here, 4-H is likely the most popular town club, most people grow up knowing how to ride a horse and hard work is a way of life. However, Elizabeth is growing as each year more Coloradans discover the town’s unique proximity to Denver. Subdivisions are popping up, but the culture of this hard-working ranch community remains unchanged.
In slow-moving, small-town Elizabeth, visitors can wander among restored Victorian homes, peek in antique, toy and vintage clothing stores on main street and pull up a chair at the local Mexican, Italian or BBQs eateries. To further explore the history of Elizabeth and Elbert County, visitors should head to the historical museum in nearby Kiowa. Volunteers keep hours Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, or they will open the museum by appointment.
Nearby Castlewood Canyon State Park is a popular recreation spot. Located in the famous Black Forest, the park offers excellent opportunities for hiking, rock climbing and bird watching. For more summertime fun, plan on attending the annual Stampede, featuring a town parade, rodeo and vintage car fest.
