The enhancement and protection of Lakewood Colorodo's neighborhoods are key goals of the City of Lakewood's Comprehensive Plan. One avenue for achieving the stated goals is through the neighborhood planning process. Neighborhood planning is a collaborative effort between city staff, residents and property owners of a neighborhood to identify goals to guide the future direction of the neighborhood. This effort helps foster strong communities that are the building blocks of a vital and active city, affords residents the opportunity to become involved in their community, and provides a pro-active, rather then a reactive, approach to neighborhood concerns as a tool to enhance the character and quality of a neighborhood.
Initiated in 1995, Lakewood's Neighborhood Planning Program primarily has focused on the northeast section of the city. This area of the city includes the older neighborhoods of Lakewood as well as neighborhoods that qualify for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding. CDBG funding provides a source for neighborhood plan implementation, which is critical to the success of a plan.
A neighborhood plan is a policy document, providing guidance to city officials and city staff regarding decisions in a neighborhood and serving as a tool to enhance the character and quality of a neighborhood. The plans are adopted by Planning Commission and approved by City Council as amendments to the Lakewood Comprehensive Plan. To date, seven neighborhood plans have been completed. The Morse Park Neighborhood Planning process is now beginning.
