Known in 1877 as “the richest square mile on earth,” and for its anything-goes lifestyle, Black Hawk and neighboring community, Central City, are now best known for their casinos. The rough and rowdy towns were once a hot spot for Jack Kerouac.

Situated in Clear Creek Canyon, a lofty, skinny gulch above the town of Golden, Black Hawk and Central City have undergone massive makeovers in the last decade, drawing a crowd of curious visitors ready for poker, slots, and blackjack ($5 maximum on bets). Casino adventures are easy to find in more than 50 game halls between the two towns. Otto’s at the Black Forest Inn (try the schnitzel and German brews!), Crook’s Palace, or Colorado Central Station are a sure bet.

Black Hawk, the more modern of the two towns, is also building a brand-new Hyatt hotel and casino. Central City is famous for its intimate, immaculately restored 1878 Opera House and summer opera series. The decorative Lace House (Black Hawk), built in 1863, has since been restored by the city and offers a glimpse into mountain mining history and at 19th-century Carpenter Gothic architecture. The Gilpin History Museum (Central City), housed in an 1870 schoolhouse, recently updated its cultural collection with three new exhibits.
