One person knows Highlands Ranch better then most. His name is Steve Ormiston. In 1978 Steve was a planner for a builder named Mission Viejo. Steve came up with the 22,000 acre master planned community and called it Highlands Ranch named after a famous ranch. Highlands Ranch is located just 12 miles south of Denver Colorado.
The builder who purchased the land in 1997 was She Homes. Today, 38 percent of home sales at Highlands Ranch are to people who already live there, residents who want to downsize or upgrade, but most of all, want to stay in this well liked community.
Much of the Construction was originally approved in 1979 but it took almost 18-months of re-zoning and about 40 some meetings until construction started. The community is part of unincorporated Douglas County, which is governed by a board of county commissioners.
Highlands Ranch is a great community with a long tradition. Highlands Ranch was once a historic ranching operation. Shea Homes used the actual name of the ranch and named streets and parks for individuals of historic significance. The company also mounted historic plaques and interpretive displays and preserved a 22,000-square-foot mansion. Several community events are held at the mansion every year. |
